Rachmaninoff Moment Musicaux Op.16 No,5 in Db Major

This is the first piece I performed during my second-year piano recital. Six moments musicaux, Op. 16, is a set of solo piano pieces composed by the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff between October and December 1896. Each Moment musical reproduces a musical form characteristic of a previous musical era. The forms that appear in Rachmaninoff's incarnation are the nocturne, song without words, barcarolle, virtuoso étude, and theme and variations. The piece is similar to the form of a barcarolle, a folk song with a rhythmic tuplet accompaniment. Playing it takes approximately five minutes, and it is 53 measures long, the shortest in terms of measures. It is an adagio sostenuto at quarter note = 54, with a simple melody presented in ternary form. Lacking any prodigious figures or difficult runs, the piece displays Rachmaninoff's capability for musical lyricism. Although the piece seems simple, the mood must be sustained by playing simultaneously restrained but dynamic triplet figures in the left hand. The melody, a chordal texture with frequently suspended tones, creates a difficult task in voicing and placing the correct emphasis on the correct notes. Its relatively short melody lines are a direct contrast to Rachmaninoff's characteristically long lines, giving a shorter time to bring out the phrases. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Recorded: Sony A7 III Audio: Seinheiser MKE 200

John Ireland 5 Songs of a Wayfarer is a song cycle for baritone and piano composed by John Ireland (1879–1962) between 1903 and c.1911, and published in 1912. It consists of settings of five poems by various poets. I performed this cycle (omitting the fourth) for the John Ireland Competition held by the University of Southampton, and funded by the John Ireland Trust. Performed and recorded during my final year recital at the University of Southampton. The Prelude and Fugue in C-sharp minor, BWV 849, is a pair of keyboard compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is the fourth prelude and fugue in the first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier, a series of 48 preludes and fugues by the composer. In my opinion, it is one of the greatest pieces ever written, and the greatest of Bach's fugues. The weight and tears of all the world are here in these 9 and a half minutes. In all of Bach's music I've never found such a darkness, yet while my mind does not usually dwell in dark places, it does keep coming back to this piece. There is something truly cosmic in both this prelude and fugue, something Bach drew out of this static framework we call a key (C# minor), something alive and timeless, yet one gets the sense that it could not work in any other key. These voices, constantly descending, as if to a grave, are somehow inherent in the spirit of C# minor. This is the first piece from my Second Year Vocal Recital, performed at the Turner Sims with pianist Helen Crawford. An aria from the opera "Ifigenia in Tauri" (1713) by Scarlatti, one of the greatest composers of the Italian Baroque. He was known for composing over 550 keyboard sonatas, originally written as exercises. It was arranged for voice and piano by Sergei Pichugin. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Italian text: Consolati! e spera!
